An aerial view looking east over Los Angeles, dated to about 1930, captures the city at a moment when airplanes were just becoming a practical tool for seeing urban growth from above. Photographs taken from the air in this period were still something of a novelty, and they offered a bird's-eye record of street grids, rail lines and neighborhoods spreading outward from the older downtown core. Los Angeles was expanding rapidly in the late 1920s and early 1930s, fueled by the automobile, new suburbs and population growth, so an image like this documents a city in the midst of dramatic change. The print also reflects the work of the Library of Congress's Prints and Photographs Division, which preserves such views as a record of American places.
