This ink drawing is the east view of New York, one of a pair in the Library of Congress that includes a south view. The record dates both only to the 1770s, and it suggests Thomas Davies, a British army officer who sketched American towns, as a possible artist. The drawings belong to a tense decade in the city. British forces occupied New York from 1776 until 1783, turning the port into a military base, so these sketches capture the town on the eve of that change.
