Drawn from the east, this ink view is one of two companion sketches of the city, the other seen from the south, and the pair is catalogued together at the Library of Congress. The record dates the drawings only to the 1770s and suggests Thomas Davies, a British army officer who sketched American towns, as a possible hand. The decade put New York at the center of the Revolution, and British forces held the city from 1776 to 1783, so the drawings capture a waterfront that was about to become a major British military base.
