Miss Stena, named in this Amsterdam chromolithograph as performing the "Descent of Absalom," appears to hang from a balloon, a daring stunt that drew paying crowds to late nineteenth-century circuses and fairground shows. The poster was printed by Faddegon & Co., a firm known for bold color advertising, and dates from between 1880 and 1900. The title's biblical reference to Absalom, who was caught by his hair in an oak tree, hints that the performer's dangling descent was meant to thrill. The print belongs to the Tissandier collection, linked to the French aeronaut Gaston Tissandier, which makes it a useful record of how ballooning was sold to the public.
