This poster is distinguished by its title, "Descente d'Absalon par Miss Stena," which names a descent performed by an aerialist identified only as Miss Stena. The French title and the Amsterdam imprint from Faddegon & Co. show that the act was advertised to European audiences in the late nineteenth century, when balloon ascents and aerial stunts drew large crowds to fairs, circuses, and public gardens. Such posters were bold chromolithographs meant to be seen from a distance, using bright color to promise spectacle. The print came from the Tissandier collection, gathered by people interested in the history of flight, and it preserves the popular entertainment culture surrounding early aeronautics.
