A Sunday communal fête in Neuilly-sur-Seine, a town just west of Paris, is the event this poster announces for July 5, 1885, with balloon ascents organized by the Union des pilotes aériens and the Société française d'aérostation. The municipality lent its patronage, so the notice presents the flights as a civic celebration as well as a spectacle. Balloon ascents drew large crowds across France in the 1880s, and posters like this one, printed by Eug. Barbier that year, paired a woodcut image with letterpress text to catch the eye of passersby.
