A color lithograph advertising a "marvelous wire-walking feat" by a performer named Fontaine, this poster promoted an act at the Folies-Bergère, the Paris music hall that opened in 1869 and built its reputation on variety entertainment. The printer, F. Appel of Paris, produced it sometime between 1870 and 1890, a period when daring aerial performances drew large crowds across France. It belongs to the Tissandier collection, gathered by Gaston Tissandier, a French aeronaut and writer, which links this stage spectacle to the wider public fascination with flight.
