A street scene in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the university town that is also the Washtenaw County seat, shows the courthouse and the street life around it. The 8 by 10 inch glass negative dates from between 1900 and 1920, a period when many American county seats were paving streets and expanding their civic buildings. It belongs to the Detroit Publishing Company collection, whose photographers recorded towns, scenery and rail routes across the country. The plate came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
