In this glass negative, President Calvin Coolidge and Mrs. Coolidge attend a circus on May 13, 1924, less than a year after he succeeded Warren G. Harding in the White House. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., commercial studio, made and distributed photographs of officials and public events, and this plate is one of its negatives. Glass negatives like this one often show streaks and other blemishes where the original coating has deteriorated, so the image may look marked or faded in places.
