This glass negative records an air circus at Bolling Field in Washington, D.C., on September 24, 1923, with General Mason and a Major M. Patrick named in the title. The National Photo Company, a Washington firm that documented official events and public occasions, made the image. The Major Patrick named is likely Mason Patrick, then chief of the Army Air Service, and displays like this one helped show the public the military's growing aviation program. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from the natural deterioration of its original coatings.
