Soldiers of Battery B, 16th Field Artillery, posed in special costumes for a society circus, an event the record dates to April 1, 1927. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio that recorded the city's events and everyday life for decades, made the image on a glass negative. Society circuses of the 1920s often drew on local military units for performers and stunts, mixing disciplined drill with festive showmanship. Visitors may notice streaks and blemishes on the negative, which come from natural deterioration of its original coating rather than from the scene itself.
