Two young men, Sydney Levy and Harold Sonneborn, pose in costume at a society circus in Long Branch, New Jersey, a seaside resort where wealthy summer residents often staged amateur entertainments. Society circuses were fashionable in the early 1900s, with members of the social set performing acrobatics, riding and clowning before an audience of friends. The glass negative is dated August 1909 and belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by a New York news photography agency that supplied pictures to newspapers. The names and date come from caption information written on the original negatives and cards, which has not been independently verified.
