Dated April 4, 1923, and titled "Society circus," this glass negative comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio that recorded the city's events and people in the early twentieth century. Society circuses were amateur entertainments, often staged for charity, in which members of well-to-do social circles took on circus acts for an audience of friends and patrons. The negative is 4 by 5 inches, and the record notes streaks and blemishes from deterioration of its original coating, so some areas may appear faded or marked. The caption is torn, so the specific performers and venue are not recorded.
