This view shows Elks gathered at the White House on July 10, 1922, according to a title and date taken from the negative sleeve and a related negative. The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks was a large fraternal organization, and its members often traveled to Washington in the early twentieth century. The National Photo Company, which documented the capital's landmarks and public events for decades, made the picture on glass, a format that recorded fine detail but was fragile. The streaks and blemishes visible on the plate come from the breakdown of its original coating rather than from the scene, so they are worth noting. The Library of Congress received the negative as a gift in 1947.
