This 1901 bird's-eye view of Fresno, the seat of the San Joaquin Valley's farm country, shows the town from a raised angle so its streets, rail lines, and blocks read at a glance. The Southern Pacific line, which reached Fresno in 1872, shaped the town's layout and its growth as a shipping point for grain, fruit, and raisins. The map was produced by Britton & Rey, a San Francisco firm known for its panoramic city views, with work credited to L. W. Klein. It is useful for seeing how the town's rail yards, business streets, and residential districts fit together at the turn of the century.
