Bakersfield sits at the southern end of the San Joaquin Valley, and this 1901 bird's-eye view shows a town that was growing fast on the strength of farming, railroad traffic and the oil discoveries nearby in Kern County. The map was drawn by the N.J. Stone Company and printed by Britton & Rey, a San Francisco lithography firm known for the detailed town views that were popular in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Such views were drawn from an imagined high vantage point, so they show streets, rail lines and individual buildings in a way a standard flat map cannot. Looking closely at the rail corridors and the street grid shows how the town organized itself around the railroad.
