Eureka sits on the shore of Humboldt Bay, one of the largest natural harbors on the California coast, and this 1902 panoramic map shows the town at the height of its lumber trade. The settlement began in the early 1850s during the gold rush era, and by the turn of the century redwood cut from the surrounding forests was moving out through its waterfront mills and wharves. The view was drawn by A. C. Noé and printed by Britton & Rey of San Francisco, two of the leading makers of bird's-eye city views in the West at the time. The angled perspective lets viewers trace the streets, the bay front and the hills behind town in a single glance.
