Few pictures pair Frederick Douglass and Booker T. Washington as directly as this color lithograph, titled *Afro-American Monument*, which the Library of Congress dates to about 1897 and credits to Chicago's Goes Lithographing Company, with copyright held by B.F. Hammond. Douglass had died in 1895, and Washington, by then the head of Tuskegee Institute, had just become a national figure after his Atlanta Exposition address that year. The record also lists slavery in the United States and African American commemoration among its subjects, so the print reflects how Black Americans in the 1890s were looking back on emancipation and forward to what they had built since.
