Chicago printer Chas. Gustrine issued this 1918 chromolithograph, "True sons of freedom," which places Abraham Lincoln alongside African American servicemen and ties the Civil War president's emancipation to the country's World War I effort. By 1918, Black Americans were serving in the army and navy, mostly in segregated units, and many hoped that wartime service would win them fuller citizenship at home. Posters like this used Lincoln as a familiar emblem of liberty and national unity, asking viewers to see Black soldiers as heirs to that cause. The design is worth noting for presenting them as patriotic defenders of freedom at a time when such claims were often contested.
