Training for war" sets itself apart on this board through its direct subject: Black American men in military training in the early years of the Second World War, when the armed forces were still segregated. W.H. Johnson had studied and worked in Europe and Scandinavia before returning to New York, and in the early 1940s he turned to color silkscreen, producing simplified, flattened forms influenced by folk art. The print comes from the Harmon Foundation records, which promoted African American artists through exhibitions and awards during this period. The record dates it to 1941 or 1942, and Adelyn Breeskin's 1971 study of Johnson's work reproduces a similar image.
