Few prints of the period show the tools of bondage as plainly as this woodcut, which depicts an iron mask, collar, leg shackles, and spurs used to restrict enslaved people. It appeared as an illustration in *The Penitential Tyrant*, an 1807 antislavery book by Thomas Branagan, a former slave trader who became a vocal critic of the trade. Printed in New York by Samuel Wood, the book relied on concrete images like this one to make the cruelties of slavery visible to its readers.
