A panoramic view of a fairground dominated by a large domed building, with railway tracks running across the foreground, places the viewer at the edge of the exposition grounds rather than at its center. Fairs of this kind were usually built beside rail lines, since trains carried the enormous crowds and the freight needed to stock temporary pavilions. The dome at the center would have served as the visual anchor of the site, the kind of monumental structure that organizers used to announce a city's ambitions to visitors arriving by train. Panoramic views like this one were popular souvenirs and also serve today as records of how fair grounds were laid out and how they connected to the wider transportation network.
