The Currier & Ives lithograph titled "The Burning of Chicago" turns to the city's great fire of October 1871, which destroyed a large part of the city center over a few days and left many thousands homeless. Printed in New York that same year, the sheet was one of the quick, dramatic images the firm produced to meet public demand for news pictures of the disaster. Prints like this one reached households far from Illinois, where readers had only newspaper accounts to go on. The catalog entry that documents the sheet places it among the firm's lithographs of the 1870s, a body of work that shaped how Americans pictured events in their own time.
