A marquee promising Jack Carson, Marion Hutton, and Robert Alda "in person" anchors this 1949 scene of a Chicago theater entrance. In the years after World War II, movie palaces often booked live personal appearances alongside their films, and crowds gathered for a chance to see screen and stage performers up close. Carson was known for light comedy on film, Hutton was a singer who had toured with a major big band, and Alda was an actor who would later be remembered for his stage work. The photograph captures the ordinary street-level bustle of city life that surrounded these evening shows.
