Here a small lighthouse stands at the mouth of the Chicago River, with the city's downtown towers rising behind it on the Lake Michigan shoreline. Taken on May 8, 1930, the view captures a working harbor where the river meets the lake, a spot that had guided ships into port for decades. By 1930, the skyline included landmarks such as the Tribune Tower and the Wrigley Building, both completed in the 1920s, which marked Chicago's rapid growth as a commercial center. The pairing of a modest navigational light with the dense city beyond shows how closely the lakefront and the river shaped the city's identity.
