Few institutions in 1939 Chicago promised a sky show as directly as the Adler Planetarium, which had opened on the lakefront in 1930 as the first planetarium in the Western Hemisphere. This silkscreen poster, titled "The Drama of the Heavens," was produced under the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration to promote the museum's celestial programs. During the Depression, the WPA employed artists to design posters for public museums, theaters and events, and silkscreen allowed bold color in small editions. Today the poster sits in the Library of Congress's WPA collection as a record of federal efforts to promote public science education.
