Mulberry Bend was once one of the most crowded and notorious blocks in Manhattan, a sharp curve of Mulberry Street lined with tenements that reformers long singled out as a symbol of urban poverty. This c1905 view comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely to document American places for commercial sale. By the time it was taken, the old tenements had been cleared, and the space was being turned into a small park that opened in the late 1890s and was later renamed Columbus Park. The picture records that transition, showing a neighborhood already shaped by immigrant life and the new civic effort to open it up.
