Dated February 11, 1839, this view of Suez comes from the third volume of David Roberts's *The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt and Nubia*. Roberts sketched the scenes on the spot during his travels in Egypt and the Holy Land in 1838 and 1839, and Louis Haghe turned the drawings into color lithographs. F.G. Moon issued the series in London in parts between 1842 and 1845, and it became one of the most widely known illustrated books of the Near East. At that time Suez, at the head of the Red Sea, was a modest port under Egyptian rule and a stop for travelers crossing between Cairo and India, which gives the plate its documentary value.
