Roberts drew this quay at Suez on February 11, 1839, during his journey through Egypt and the Near East, and it was later reproduced as a color lithograph by Louis Haghe. The print appeared in *The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt and Nubia*, issued in London by F. G. Moon in parts between 1842 and 1845. Suez was then a modest port at the northern end of the Red Sea, well before the Suez Canal opened in 1869 and transformed it. Roberts's on-the-spot sketches gave European readers some of the first detailed visual records of such places, so the plate is valued both as a view of a working waterfront and as a document of the period.
