Alben Barkley, the Kentucky lawmaker pictured here, was serving in the U.S. House of Representatives around 1921, a few years before he moved to the Senate. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio active in the 1910s and 1920s, made many portraits of officials and public figures during that era. The record notes that the glass negative shows streaks and blemishes from the natural breakdown of its original coating, so the image's surface is visibly aged. The title spelled his middle initial as "B.," though he is generally known as Alben William Barkley.
