The sitter is named on the negative sleeve as Archibald E. Olpp of New Jersey, though the National Photo Company supplied that title and it has not been verified. The picture dates to about 1921, when the company, based in Washington, D.C., produced large numbers of portraits and news photographs. Herbert A. French gave the glass negatives to the Library of Congress in 1947, and the plate has aged, so streaks and small blemishes from the breakdown of its original coatings are visible.
