The record identifies the subject only as "Wm. C. Langford, Ga.," a label the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve, so the sitter and the reason for the "Ga." notation are not confirmed. The company, which worked in Washington, D.C., from the early 1900s into the 1930s, produced large numbers of glass negatives of public figures, visitors and civic scenes, and this one dates from about 1921. Its surface shows the streaks and blemishes that come from the aging of the original coating, which is typical of glass plates from this collection. The negative was given to the Library of Congress by Herbert A. French in 1947.
