The title, "T. Frank Appleby, N.J.," names a man and his home state, but it comes from the National Photo Company's own notes on the negative or its sleeve and has not been independently verified. The company ran a large commercial studio in Washington, D.C., in the early twentieth century, producing glass negatives of public figures, visitors and events. Herbert A. French gave this example to the Library of Congress in 1947. Its surface shows streaks and blemishes from the natural deterioration of the original coatings, a common condition for glass plates of this age.
