Frank B. Willis, who had just been elected governor of Ohio, sits for this portrait dated January 14, 1921, only days after he took office. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that made thousands of portraits of officials and public figures in the 1910s and 1920s, produced the glass negative. The studio's documentation of its subjects is a useful record of how political figures were presented in that era. The negative's record notes streaks and blemishes from the deterioration of its original coating, which are visible in the image.
