Frank W. Mondell, a Republican who represented Wyoming in the U.S. House of Representatives, sat for this portrait in late November 1920, a few weeks after that year's election. He was serving as the party's floor leader in the House at the time, so the sitting came as Congress was preparing to convene. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio that photographed many officials of the period, made the image on glass. Visible streaks and blemishes on the negative reflect the natural deterioration of its original coating.
