Labeled "T. Frank Appleby, N.J.," this glass negative carries a name and a New Jersey location, though the Library of Congress notes that the title comes from unverified information written by the National Photo Company. The company operated in Washington, D.C., in the early twentieth century and produced a large body of portraits, street scenes, and civic subjects, and the negative is dated to about 1921 based on others in the same range. Glass plates of this kind were widely used before roll film became common, and the record notes streaks and blemishes from the natural breakdown of the original coating, which still show on the plate.
