The view looks down over the Jordan Valley, a long trench of land cutting through the hills of the Holy Land, and David Roberts drew it on the spot during his travels in the early 1840s. The plate was lithographed by Louis Haghe and published in London by F.G. Moon as part of the multi-volume set The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt and Nubia. Roberts's sketches, turned into hand-colored stone prints, gave European readers of the period a vivid sense of landscapes and ruins that many had only read about in scripture.
