Absalom's Pillar, the rock-cut monument in the Kidron Valley east of Jerusalem, is the focus of this color lithograph from David Roberts's The Holy Land. Roberts sketched the scene on the spot during his 1839 journey through the region, and Louis Haghe turned those drawings into stone-printed plates for the London edition published by F.G. Moon between 1842 and 1845. The monument, traditionally linked to the biblical Absalom, has long been identified by travelers with the Valley of Jehoshaphat, a name tied to the belief that this is where the Last Judgment will take place. The plate reflects the mid-nineteenth-century European fascination with biblical sites, which Roberts's work helped popularize.
