The Fountain of Job, known in Arabic as Bir Ayyub, sits where the Valley of Hinnom meets the Kidron Valley just south of Jerusalem's old walls. Tradition ties the spring to the biblical Job, and the valley's name became linked with Gehenna, a symbol of punishment in Jewish and Christian writing. David Roberts made the drawing during his 1839 journey through the Near East, and Louis Haghe turned it into a color lithograph for *The Holy Land*, published in London in parts from 1842 to 1845. Its stone-walled setting and the figures at the water's edge show how European readers of that era pictured biblical sites.
