Of the many views David Roberts made in the Holy Land, this color lithograph focuses on the Pool of Siloam, the rock-cut basin at the mouth of the Tyropoeon valley, set in the Valley of Jehoshaphat below the walls of Jerusalem. Roberts sketched the region during his 1839 visit and returned to England to have the drawings translated into lithographs by Louis Haghe, published in parts by F. G. Moon between 1842 and 1845. The plate reflects the mid-century European appetite for accurate, atmospheric views of biblical sites, and it remains a useful record of how the spring-fed pool looked to Victorian travelers.
