Few sites in Jerusalem carry as much scripture as the Lower Pool of Siloam, the basin at the foot of the Valley of Jehoshaphat shown here. The Gospel of John places a healing there, when Jesus tells a blind man to wash in its waters, and the pool drew pilgrims and travelers for centuries. David Roberts, the Scottish painter who toured the Near East in 1838 and 1839, sketched the scene on the spot. Louis Haghe then turned those drawings into color lithographs for the London edition of *The Holy Land*, issued between 1842 and 1845. The plate reflects the appetite of nineteenth-century European readers for biblical places rendered with a sense of firsthand accuracy.
