Cadets from Japan are the focus of this September 27, 1929 glass negative, which shows President Herbert Hoover receiving them only months after his March inauguration. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that recorded officials and visitors throughout this period, made the image, and Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947. Visits like this were a routine part of diplomacy in the late 1920s. Note the streaks and blemishes on the glass, which come from the natural deterioration of the original coatings.
