Here the subject is George Washington seen in left profile, shown from the head and shoulders, a format engravers used often for portraits meant to be copied and hung in homes, taverns, and schoolrooms. Profile views were a familiar convention in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, borrowed from classical coins and medals, and they gave Washington a dignified, almost monumental look. The caption card gives no date, so the exact year of the engraving is unknown, but portraits like this circulated widely after his death in 1799 as part of the national cult of his memory. Its value to researchers lies in how it shows the way his image was shaped for public display.
