Photographed in Philadelphia in September 1899, this view shows the U.S.S. Detroit, a steel protected cruiser of the United States Navy and one of the vessels that carried the ship's name in honor of the Michigan city. The ship's hull and rigging are the focus of the composition, and the negative's inscription ties it to a specific visit to the Philadelphia yards. The picture was made as part of the Detroit Publishing Company's large body of American views, a commercial collection of photographs and color prints of cities, landmarks and industry from the 1890s into the early 1900s.
