Harper Hospital, one of Detroit's long-standing medical institutions, is the subject of this view, made around 1906 on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative. The Detroit Publishing Company, which documented the city and its institutions in the early twentieth century, produced such large-format plates for commercial sale of views and postcards. Hospital buildings of this period often show the civic pride and growing medical care of rapidly expanding American cities, and the large negative preserves architectural detail that smaller formats could not capture.
