A yacht named *Detroit* is shown at the moment of its launch, the boat's name identifying it as a vessel built for the city's own waterfront. The picture is an 8 by 10 inch glass negative made sometime between 1890 and 1910 by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that sold views of American cities and landscapes as souvenirs and postcards. Launchings like this one drew crowds to the riverfront, where shipyards and wharves served the boat trade that made Detroit a center of Great Lakes shipping and recreational boating. Pictures of such events record the vessel as well as the piers and onlookers around it.
