A vessel named *Detroit* sits on the ways, the sloped timber cradle that carried a hull down into the water at launch, in this view of a Michigan shipyard. Detroit and its surrounding waters were a center of boatbuilding in the late 1800s, when steam-powered yachts and pleasure craft drew wealthy owners to the Great Lakes and the Detroit River. The Detroit Publishing Company made this 8 by 10 inch glass plate negative between about 1890 and 1910, as part of its broad record of American cities, industries and waterfronts. The picture is useful for seeing how large wooden hulls were supported and worked before launch.
