Belle Isle, the wooded island park in the Detroit River, is the setting here, and the record also lists bridges among the subjects. The city acquired the island in the late 1870s and developed it into a public park with drives, lawns, and shaded paths that drew carriages and strollers on summer afternoons. This 8 by 10 inch glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed towns and landscapes across the country around 1900 and sold views to tourists and publishers. Large glass plates like this one captured fine detail, which makes them valuable records of how the park looked in its early years.
