The Sprudel, a hot mineral spring that shoots water into the air at intervals, sets this view of Carlsbad apart, and the colonnade built over it sheltered visitors who came to drink the warm water. Carlsbad, in Bohemia, drew patients and well-to-do travelers from across Europe, and its colonnades were the center of the daily routine of strolling and drinking. The print comes from the Detroit Publishing Company's photochrom series, a process that layered colored lithographic stones over a photograph.
