Two small stuffed mammals sit beside a tree in this staged arrangement, a subject that sets it apart from the portraits and street views that dominate early daguerreotype collections. Specimen still lifes suited the medium well: exposures in the 1840s ran to several minutes, so motionless taxidermy made an ideal subject, and natural history collectors valued the fine detail the process could capture. The plate is a sixth-plate, a small format often used for inexpensive, portable images. The record names no maker, so the picture is best read as a window onto mid-century interest in collecting and displaying natural specimens.
